Zipped and Hedwig
How do language, labels/categories and the agents/processes of socialization operate such that the characters in Zipped and Hedwig succeed and/or fail to maintain, obey, and possibly resist a gendered duality?
General Purpose: Plante’s Chapter 3 discusses how and why language and labels/categories have come to define and redefine our understandings, attitudes, attributions, and behaviors based on the gender duality. Plante’s Chapter 4 discusses how various socialization agents (from peers through religion) create/perpetuate those processes via (sub) cultures, norms, etc. The video Hedwig and the Angry Inch (HAI) depicts various struggles with the gender duality, and Zipped yet depicts another type of struggle with it. The paper involves an analysis of how those language and labels/categories (Ch 3) and agents and processes of socialization (Ch 4) help explain the lives and events of people in Zipped and Hedwig that are caught up in and complying/resisting a gendered duality.
Question: How do language, labels/categories and the agents/processes of socialization operate such that the characters in Zipped and Hedwig succeed and/or fail to maintain, obey, and possibly resist a gendered duality?
Course readings/video required: you must use the breadth of Plante Chs. 3 & 4, McNeal, and HAI to answer this question.
Citations and Underlining- NO CITE & UNDERLINE- NO CREDIT
In order to receive credit you are REQUIRED to 1) individually underline each term/concept you will use throughout to provide your analysis AND individually cite each one of those term/concept that you employ from our course readings as a clear means by which to demonstrate your response specifically integrates the required course materials. (You don’t underline your entire quotes or examples (that defeats the purpose, eh?) Just underline the terms, concepts, principles, and/or theories you select from Plante- and cite from McNeal for examples used from that book.) You do NOT need to actually cite the movie Hedwig and the Angry Inch (HAI), but may abbreviate it as HAI after the first usage.
Bibliography/ Works Cited page: NONE (we know what they are: Plante Ch 4 & 5 and McNeal)
EXAMPLE FORMAT FOR IN-TEXT CITATION: just identify with a citation (Author, page) where you derive your term/concept/theory from AND provide an example from the course readings, respectively: “Sexuality researchers claim that [your term/concept/theory here used and briefly explained] (Plante 312), as we can see when [your example and discussion about it here] (McNeal: 111).”
