Each student’s 1000 word written account of their group’s work including (500 words each)
• 500 words of a summary of group’s findings on the topic;
and
• 500 words of a summary of your individual intellectual contribution, such as the research essay you located and summarised. (Note: Conduct basic
research on the texts and relevant theory. You need to find one essay/text that assists in the process. Present key points from the research
essay/text that relates to the symposium topic. You need to post a brief summary of useful points from that research essay.)
Topic: In relation to Utopia(two texts), each group needs to present on the ways literature imagines other worlds and how the literary imagination
may relate to environmental issues. Our group is doing Utopia( two texts: Plato- Republic p27, Aldous Huxley’s brave New World p 347)
Individual freedom/thought:
-Education – opportunities and limitations in nurturing growth/way of thinking
– teach different classes different skills
-equal education for men/women
-Lack of imagination
– Conditioned to accept hierarchy i.e. good being a beta
– Republic – taught to think v Brave New World taught want to think
-Ethics/morality(.e. plato spends a lot of time arguing laws which we agree with v Brave New World where they do things we wouldn’t agree with)
