The Internet Fries Your Brain or Brains, Zapped by Technology
The internet is a modern technology that has had a huge impact on how people conduct their lives. Today, information that was once found in large volumes only at a library is now available on the internet. Today the internet has played a vital role in enabling people to communicate and study using new methods that were previously inaccessible and at much quicker speed. In “Hal and Me” by Nicholas Carr, Carr argues that since the wide use of the internet began, intelligent thought patterns, critical thinking, as well as attention spans have completely changed and not for the better. He also argues that the internet is enshrined with certain interruptions, which are not present when one is reading a book. However, Carr’s statement that people derive more knowledge from traditional print media maybe inaccurate. Internet enhances education because it enables persons to access information, develop critical thought, and perform quicker research,
Internet has a wide variety of knowledge-based information, which is accessible at your fingertips by clicking “search”. The author thinks that internet has changed the way he used to think and he admits this when he states
“I’m not thinking the way I used to think. I feel it most strongly when I’m reading. I used to find it easy to immerse myself in a book or a lengthy article. My mind would get caught up in the twists of the narrative or the turns of the argument and I’d spend hours strolling through long stretches of prose. That’s rarely the case anymore. Now my concentration starts to drift after a page or two. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do. I feel as though I’m always dragging my wayward brain back to the text. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle”. (Carr 314)
Although, Carr claims the internet makes people unable not to concentrate, it allows them to learn new ideas that are not otherwise easily found. The internet is a central source of secondary information, which allows people to know the ideas of other prominent people on a certain topic. Information found on the internet is essential to researchers especially when they are writing literature review of their area of study.
Internet education also enhances critical thinking among the learners. In “Hal and Me” Carr outlines his nervousness about the internet. Although his views are carefully researched as well as constructed, he fails to recognize the role internet plays in enhancing critical thought. The internet enhances people’s ability in thinking rationally and clearly. This is because internet contains information that enables the user carry out effective analysis as well as evaluation of an issue with the aim of forming a judgment. According to the author, internet is valuable, but it is having a negative effect on his concentration. He outlines that “Once I was scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski” (Carr 315). Something like television could be to blame more than the internet. The web serves as a convenient and modern way of engaging in dialogue with other people to enhance critical thought.
Much of the information found on the internet is identical to that of print or other media and offers some extra benefits. On some occasions information can be on the internet before available anywhere else. The writer says at one point he let all of all newspapers and magazines subscriptions cancel because by the time a print copy could arrive he had already read everything and none of it was new (Carr 324). Unlike with physical print of newspaper, magazine, or books it is possible to communicate with the authors or editors on the internet using various method; most commonly Facebook and Twitter. Some media, including textbook can be cheaper online, thus saving many students money.
In conclusion, Carr is a unique writer, but he fails to appreciate and recognize the role played by the internet. He believes the internet can become addictive and change the way the people think. He says, about his brain, “It was hungry, it demanding to be fed the way the Net fed it —and the more it was fed, the hungrier it became” (Carr 325). He fails to see the affect things like YouTube, Facebook, and even email can have on students and how much it can speed up the learning and communication process.
