The mission statement gives the reason for the firm’s existence and it provides a direction to the actions of the firm.
1. The mission statement should give an insight into the kind of products and services the firm is delivering, the priorities it has set for achieving its goals and the kind of public image it wants to create (McNamara, 2009). This is important as the purpose of the mission statement is to let the readers know in a glance the reason of being for the organization. It should be appropriately worded to make an impact.
2. The mission statement should be a representative of the fundamental nature of the organization, the values it hopes to create and the work it is going to do. In short, it must define three things: the purpose, the business and the values of the organization (Radtke, 1998).
3. The mission statement should reflect the true purpose or aim of the organization, even if it is as blunt as Nike’s old mission statement: Crush Reebok. It should be “inspirational, achievable and completely graspable” (Welch & Welch, 2008). This is because it is important for mission statement to be close to reality goals and to word the actual reason for the establishment of the organization.
4. Create a mission statement that has room for adjustments and that incorporates the changing needs and environments. The mission statement should not be fixed and rigid (Hammonds, 2001). If with the course of time you realize that the mission statement is not appropriate, don’t hesitate to modify it with the new needs. This is important to keep the statement close to reality.
Vision statements are inspirational statements, which on one hand motivate the employees of the organization as to what they need to do to contribute towards the organization and on the other hand they inform the customers about the core values of the organization.
