This is a brief in the soil lab:
Compaction is the process of increasing the density of a soil by packing the particles together with a reduction in the volume of the air. The degree of compaction of a soil is measured in terms of the mass of dry soil per unit volume of the soil, the dry density (ρd).
The purpose of this test is to determine the dry density of the sample soil when it is compacted in a specified manner over a range of moisture contents (w). The range includes the optimum moisture content at which the maximum dry density for the degree of compaction is obtained.
In this test the automatic compactor will be used with a 2.5 Kg rammer falling from a height of 300 mm to compact the soil in three layers into a 2305 cm3 compaction mould.
Assume the role of a graduate engineer for ‘ A Ltd’. Your role is to produce an engineering technical report relating to the laboratory results you undertook. The client is a company called ‘Engineering Associates’, who wish to construct a new railway line from the North Borders region to West Borders region. Assume that the soil samples you tested as part of your laboratory were taken from a site on the proposed line. You are required to write a professional engineering report describing the soil conditions on the new line, and their implications on construction, based upon your compaction tests.
