General Electric would not have made it to the top without extensive and thorough research initiatives, which is the most vital soft technology used by GE today. The company also has its own Global Research Network and global leadership institute, which utilizes several types of collaborative virtual programs, digital platforms, and workspaces that allow students, employees, and customers to get the most out of communicating with General Electric. These types of technologies require people to operate them, which places them in the soft technology category.

General Electric has created countless hard technologies to make our lives easier and more efficient. For example, GE uses their Power and Water‘s Jenbacher Gas Engine in order to provide power to one of BMW’s manufacturing plants in Germany (General Electric, 2014). The company has also created a next generation locomotive using only data and software models, not to mention their initiatives and innovations in solar and wind powered energy (General Electric, 2014).  The company uses advanced fiber optic technology for communication systems, integrated electric motor driven compressors, gas and steam turbines, air-cooled heat exchangers, as well as many other hard forms of technology. General Electric virtually uses countless technologies and has created even more.

General Electric has the solution to any technology barriers the company may encounter domestically and globally. In fact, GE creates whatever technologies they may need. This is why the company has a research institute utilized for advancing their technologies and innovations. In order to protect GE’s inventions and innovations, the company makes use of patents, so much so, that any individual interested in submitting ideas to General Electric may first obtain a patent in order to obtain credit for their ideas shared with GE (General Electric, 2014). In my opinion, this is a well thought out strategy for protecting technologies, while offering the general public the opportunity to play a part in GE’s growth potential.

The company has literally covered every recommendation that I have considered suggesting, such as offering incentives or compensation to outsiders that choose to share their ideas with GE and ensuring that the ideas are new and not repetitive to older patented ideas. The company actually has its own “GE Submitted Ideas Operation,” in which employees are constantly observing older patented ideas and comparing them to the newer innovations coming out and being submitted to them by the general public (General Electric, 2014). Needless to say, the company has an extremely strategic business practice, in which all areas are covered before even embarking on a new adventure, so much so, that the possibilities are endless and there is no room for making recommendations to such an advanced technological business.
