Many businesses have a tendency to monitor the actions of their employees as a strategy to ensure that organizational behavior is streamlined and the cost the company incurs is reduced. This is however not an effective method to rate them since these behaviors are incoherent and at times misjudged. One such behavior is monitoring the employee internet utilization which at times could be taken as vandalism of company’s resources. This survey is done using soft wares though according to many elites it is not advocated for since much of what we do in the contemporary society is based on internet even if it is not work based. This is portrayed by the multiple numbers of people who enroll in social networks and e-business operations. This paper takes a key focus on the aftermaths of monitoring employees’ internet use.
Why internet use should not be monitored in businesses
Monitoring of employees in the contemporary businesses has been done using soft wares such as ‘winwhatwhere pollster’. Though this is the case it has been seen to be much expensive since it incurs about $99 for a single business and about $500 for every 10 such businesses. This is quite expensive particularly for miniature upcoming businesses.
Such soft wares as spy have been ineffective since they only monitor authorized internet users while others are not restricted. This poses as a jeopardy to cause infringement of information by non employees hence a danger of data loss. They have also been shown to augment internet data thus an extravagant use of money for the business. The monitoring of this software also requires additional employees who will monitor the rightfulness of the data generated by these soft wares since at times it might be erroneous. This may be effective but it is an additional cost for the company other than maximizing profits thus not economical.
Monitoring of internet for employees feels like they are in a totalitarianism management, they feel controlled and also get the wrong impression of such enforcers. This makes employees feel demoralized since their autonomy is deprived off from them resulting to negative working attitudes, poor empowerment of employees also through demoralization and ultimately poor productivity due to lack of know how and poor information concerning the market. This is because many of the employees resent this and feel less engaged when the decision was made.
Most businesses in contemporary society are taking their operations in terms of advertising, communication and logistics globally via the internet hence the need to accept internet use as an integral part of business. Internet literacy is also a vital requirement for employees thus advocating against it is controversial and in overall such businesses lack customer oriented focuses. Advocating for internet illiteracy will only result to poor performance of such businesses since they will be lagging behind in creating customer relations and in establishing their markets.
Generation of baby boomers and echo boomers all require internet use particularly using social networks which have been seen as effective ways to increase the reach to customers. These generations X and Y belief that internet is a crucial aspect of business though generation X will require monitoring due to the tendency to indulge in face book among other social networks. This means that for freedom in internet to be realized use self discipline, intellect and accountability must be enhanced at work otherwise companies could incur losses.
Further according to research done no significant impact has been born positively either in production or financial earnings on monitoring employees hence no notable resource inhibition. However significant difference has been noted on training employees on the need to reduce internet abuse and addiction through rehabilitation and training. This has been a show of concern for the good welfare of employees since it considers the social face of the company and the needs of the company to maximize profits.
Internet is an integral part of development and progress of any business particularly with the modern improvements in technology. This has become inevitable in our companies and through training conducive use of internet via rehabilitation and training to reduce abuse. This will foresee progressive business success concurrently it will enhance self discipline at work.
