PART 1
In this lesson we will study the first chapters of James Joyce’s novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The Discussion Forum is an Internet hunt for artifacts (pictures, music, historical references) related to Dublin around 1900.
internet Search (PLEASE BE DETAILED): Please use the Internet to find information on, pictures of, recordings of,
maps of, etc. at least five (5) people, places, things, or events mentioned in
Portrait. If you can find information, pictures, etc. from around 1900, that would be
good, but contemporary items are acceptable.

Part 2
We will be discussing James Joyce’s novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Because the novel is a bit longer than most of our reading assignments, I’d like you to start reading it now.
As you go through the novel, please make a list of recurrent themes and motifs that you notice, along with their page numbers or the chapters/sections that you find them in.
A motif is a recurring image or set of images usually attached to and helping to develop an idea or theme. For example, one of the themes in the novel has to do with Stephen’s poor eyesight. Notice the number of times “ eyes” or “sight” or something connected with them are mentioned just in the first chapter.
You will use this list to help you write the essay on A Portrait . . . that will be assigned in Lesson 10. For that essay I will ask you to select one of the motifs on your list and describe the extent to which it pervades the novel and how and what it contributes to the novel and its themes.
Sparknotes and other online sites devoted to A Portrait . . . contain discussions on themes and motifs, but the themes and motifs they identify are usually too broad to be really useful (e.g., “The Role of the Artist” or “Prayers, Secular Songs, and Latin Phrases”). If you do consult them, please be very sure to acknowledge any information you get from them.
Please paste into the journal the list of motifs and themes in A Portrait of the Artist . . . that you have been working on since Lesson 2 when you started reading the novel. Please remember to include the chapter/section of the novel (or the page numbers) where you found the instances of the themes or motifs that you list. Remember to identify and acknowledge any secondary sources you used.
doesn’t have to have a cover or paragraph format. Just list the motifs and themes in “a portrait of the artist” and include the chapter/section of the novel or page number.
