Breaking The Waves
Bess seems to have confused the limits and proper role of her faith in guiding her behavior. She gives ‘reasons’ for her self-sacrifice. Other characters in the film attempt to convince her that she is being unreasonable. Explain how Socrates’ arguments to enlighten Euthyphro about the proper relationship between justice and piety might have helped Bess. For this assignment you will have to provide a clear exegesis of the ‘reasons’ Bess gives for her actions and how they are confronted by other characters in the film. Make sure to devote AT LEAST 3/4 of a page discussing Socrates’ insight about the relationship between justice and piety.
