You are required to submit a scholarly paper in which you will identify, describe, research, and apply the concepts that underlie your personal philosophy for professional nursing practice.

You are required to submit a scholarly paper in which you will identify, describe, research, and apply the concepts that underlie your personal philosophy for professional nursing practice.

This will help you identify your own values and beliefs about the established metaparadigms and metatheories of the discipline. It will also help you identify and articulate concepts relevant to your specific practice. This paper is intended to be an exercise in clarification and organization of your professional foundation. You are also required to provide a list of assumptions from personal nursing practice that illustrate the concepts and framework of your theory.

Your paper should follow a format that includes:

  • Nursing Autobiography: A brief (1 page) discussion of your background in nursing.
  • The Four Metaparadigms: Identification, discussion, and documentation from the literature of your perspective on the basic four metaparadigms/concepts of patient, nurse, health, and environment.
  • Two Practice-Specific Concepts: Identification, discussion, and documentation from the literature of your perspective on at least two other concepts specific to your own practice.
  • List of Propositions: A numbered list of at least five propositions or assumption statements that clearly connect the concepts described.

Each week, you will complete various segments of your Concept Synthesis Paper and submit it to the W1: Assignment 3 Dropbox for facilitator feedback when necessary. Your paper should integrate these discrete elements and reflect your personal nursing philosophy.

Your Concept Synthesis Paper on your Personal Nursing Philosophy is due in Week 3. However, it is recommended that you begin working on your paper from Week 1 onwards and complete the various components related to the paper week wise as you progress through the course. The suggested tasks for each week are:

Week 1: Nursing Biography and The Four Metaparadigms of Nursing
Week 2: Two Practice-specific Concepts, and List of Propositions/Assumptions
Week 3: Due: Concept Synthesis Paper on Personal Nursing Philosophy

Consider the following questions as you complete your various tasks related to this assignment.

1. How do I define and employ the four basic metaparadigms of nursing theory in my professional practice?
2. What are the major concepts I employ that are unique to my professional practice?
3. What philosophies and theories from the literature of nursing and other disciplines/domains are consistent with these concepts?
4. How are the concepts of transcultural nursing, the health promotion model, skill acquisition, role theory, and change theory specifically integrated into my philosophy and practice?
5. What research supports these theories and concepts?
6. How do I integrate role and change theory into my professional practice and how may these theories be applied to the organization in which I practice?

The paper is to be thoroughly researched and well documented, with relevant material from the nursing theorists presented incorporated into the paper. Use the current edition of the APA Manual throughout the paper. Sources should focus on references from nursing theory but may also include conceptual and theoretical material from other professional domains. The paper, excluding references or appendices, is to be limited to 6-10 pages. Writing should be succinct and well organized, as it is impossible for the facilitator to evaluate form and content separately.

Your philosophy/framework is to be given a title that is appropriate to its content and emphasis.

For this discussion, you will collect assessment data about your city or county. This post will include information about demographics (general characteristics) and epidemiological data (disease or health behavior rates) of your community.

  1. Demographic data: Go online to the U.S. Census Bureau at Obtain a range information about the demographic characteristics of the population for your city or county of residence. You may have to look at county data if your city is not listed. Discuss demographic data about age, ethnicity, poverty levels, housing, and education.
  2. Epidemiological data: Go to your city or county health department website (search the Internet) or County Health Rankings ( and report epidemiological data about your area.
  3. Identify several priority health concerns for your area.

Here is a helpful tip sheet about the U.S. Census website located in Course Resources that will assist you in using this website as a resource.

Nies, M. A., & McEwen, M. (2015). Community/Public health nursing: Promoting the health of populations (6th ed.). St. Louis, MO: Saunders/Elsevier

In assessing a community, the nurse starts with direct observation as done in the windshield survey. The nurse will need to collect additional data to support these observations and to assist in completing a comprehensive assessment. Demographic and epidemiological data provides essential information on the aggregate. Use this data to describe your city or county and identify priority health concerns for that area. I look forward to the data you share and learning more about your community

Discussion Question

Formulating the Research Question, Problem Statement, Research Purpose

In the discussion forum you had an opportunity to present a potential problem and an innovative solution specific to your role specialization. In addition, you have reviewed the literature to identify qualitative and quantitative research articles and submitted annotated bibliographies to provide evidence supporting the problem.

Considering the feedback provided to you by the faculty member it is now time to prepare your problem statement, research purpose, and research question.

First share your refined problem and proposed solution (given your review of literature this may have changed depending on the evidence you were able to provide). Next, follow the steps to help define your research question.

  1. Craft the problem statement and research purpose.
  2. Design your research question aimed at solving (a part of) the problem and include the following components which will focus the literature review.

PICOT Question:

Patient, Population or Problem

  1. What are the characteristics of the patient or population?
  2. What is the condition or disease you are interested in?

Intervention or exposure

  1. What do you want to do with this patient (e.g. treat, diagnose, observe)?

  1. What is the alternative to the intervention (e.g. placebo, different drug, surgery)?

  1. What are the relevant outcomes (e.g. morbidity, death, complications)?
  1. Ensure that the research question is answerable, feasible and clinically relevant

The next step in will be to develop a research hypothesis from the research question.

Provide constructive feedback to your classmate’s responses

Think back upon your first topic question in Unit 1 and the four assignments you completed in this course.

Think back upon your first topic question in Unit 1 and the four assignments you completed in this course. What do you believe about the influences of theory on nursing practice? What value do you place on using a model for practice as an advanced practice registered nurse? How has your philosophy of advanced practice nursing changed over the last nine weeks? Question should be 3-4 paragraphs and have 3 references please.

This is my topic 1 question and answer:

“A philosophy of science is a perspective-a lens, a way one views the world , and in the case of advance practice nurses, the viewpoint the nurse acts from in every encounter with a patient, family or group” (Butts & Rich, 2015, p.3). It is the responsibility of nurses to be able to view science from various perspectives, including scientist, providers, patients, family and the society in which they live (Butts & Rich, 2015, p.11).

As a nurse working in a large teaching institution, I have had the opportunity to work with many novice and quite experienced nurses. I observe them and reflect on myself as a somewhat seasoned nurse. There are many nurses that I work with that are from different countries, religious backgrounds and hold different value systems. As a Christian, Ghanaian nurse, at times I have to really evaluate situation without bias and understand what the patient, co-worker or family member needs from me as a nurse. An interesting article I read published on says it best, “we walk alongside the patient as they continue to interact with and “within” their environment (hospital or home, young body or old body, and spiritual realms) and we enhance their ability to interact with it “better” (Nurseinterupted, 2012).

Two years ago my sister passed away from a rare condition and I was no longer the nurse, I was the concerned family member. It really put things in perspective for me and I realized how vulnerable we all are when we are ill or caring for our sick family members. I observed all the nurses that cared for her and saw first-hand how important empathy and compassion from nursing can improve the patient’s outcome. “As patient advocates, APNs should identify patient preferences in an emphatic and non-paternalistic fashion in order to navigate, coordinate and facilitate multi-disciplinary and patient-centered treatment plans” (Guia-Rayos, 2014).

Course Project: Part 3—Translating Evidence into Practice

Course Project: Part 3—Translating Evidence into Practice

In Part 3 of the Course Project, you consider how the evidence you gathered during Part 2 can be translated into nursing practice.

Now that you have located available research on your PICOT question, you will examine what the research indicates about nursing practices. Connecting research evidence and findings to actual decisions and tasks that nurses complete in their daily practice is essentially what evidence-based practice is all about. This final component of the Course Project asks you to translate the evidence and data from your literature review into authentic practices that can be adopted to improve health care outcomes. In addition, you will also consider possible methods and strategies for disseminating evidence-based practices to your colleagues and to the broader health care field.

To prepare:

  • Consider Parts 1 and 2 of your Course Project. How does the research address your PICOT question?
  • With your PICOT question in mind, identify at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in two or more of the articles from your literature review. Consider what the evidence indicates about how this practice contributes to better outcomes.
  • Explore possible consequences of failing to adopt the evidence-based practice that you identified.
  • Consider how you would disseminate information about this evidence-based practice throughout your organization or practice setting. How would you communicate the importance of the practice?

To complete:

In a 3- to 4-page paper:

  • Restate your PICOT question and its significance to nursing practice.
  • Summarize the findings from the articles you selected for your literature review. Describe at least one nursing practice that is supported by the evidence in the articles. Justify your response with specific references to at least 2 of the articles.
  • Explain how the evidence-based practice that you identified contributes to better outcomes. In addition, identify potential negative outcomes that could result from failing to use the evidence-based practice.
  • Outline the strategy for disseminating the evidence-based practice that you identified throughout your practice setting. Explain how you would communicate the importance of the practice to your colleagues. Describe how you would move from disseminating the information to implementing the evidence-based practice within your organization. How would you address concerns and opposition to the change in practice?

By Day 7 of Week 10

This part of the Course Project is due. It should be combined with the other two components of the Course Project and turned in as your Portfolio Assignment for this course.

Note: In addition, include a 1-page summary of your project.

who controls nursing?

1. who controls nursing? (Consider nursing practice on all levels in your discussion.).I work in ICU. I would like discussion reflect ICU prespective if it applies. This is a discussion post atleast 8 sentences. This is an example of discussion post from another classmate below by ashely poppa

2. Reply to stephanie renoylds post with reflective and respectful questions or arguments or constructive feedback- atleast 5 sentences

Ashley Popa –Nursing is controlled by a variety of people and groups, none of whom control nursing entirely. The public controls nursing by influencing public health issues and by creating different nursing environments such as homeless care, home health, public health clinics, etc. Patients control nursing by creating personal demands for care. Some patients are more or less demanding than others which can control nursing care in addition to the nursing care required by their medical needs. Study participants and researchers for evidence based practice can control nursing care because policies and procedures change based on study results. The nurse controls nursing care because he or she carries out the physical and emotional act of nursing. Doctors and mid-level providers control nursing care by entering orders for the nurse to execute. Management controls nursing care by creating goals for nursing staff such as infection control measures or overtime prevention. Hospital or clinic administration control nursing by creating policies, utilization management, ethics law, etc. that affects day to day nursing. Members of legislature and government agencies affect nursing by passing laws related to healthcare. In summary, there are many many people, groups and other factors that control nursing but none that control nursing as a whole. Nursing it far too comprehensive to be completely controlled by just one person or group.

Stephanie Reynolds

Who controls nursing?-I believe that nursing is controlled by many factors. One of which is the patient! Nursing scores are based solely on patient satisfaction and standards of care are being centered around patient surveys. While I do believe that nurses have a lot of power and influence regarding nursing as well as safe and effective practice, nurses still must battle with patient satisfaction versus standard practice. There are many evidence based practices that nurses follow day to day that are in place strictly to improve satisfaction scores because of what patients want and what will make them happier. For example, hospital bedside nurses are frequently being told how to provide care to patients that will increase the hospitals scores. Administration is so concerned with scores from patient surveys that they tend to forget why we became nurses in the first place. The state board of nursing plays a large role in nursing control. We must adhere to specific rules and nurse practice guidelines that are set by each state board. Nurses can also take better control by joining committees and voicing their opinions on nursing care and advocating for better standards of practice. Nursing is a very broad field and caters to many different job opportunities. It is hard for me to point to one direction when it comes to who controls nursing as there are so many factors in play. For myself, I would say that I am in control. I take care of every patient the same as I would the next one. I advocate for myself, other staff members, as well as my patients and I speak up when I see something that isn’t right or if I feel like it is not working on my unit. Nursing is about teamwork, as I believe that if we work together and ensure excellent nursing care, we will always have the upper hand in controlling our field of practice.

PICOT Statement

The first step of the EBP process is to develop a question from the nursing practice problem of interest.

Select a practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research.

Start with the patient and identify the clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care.

Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT statement in your selected practice problem area of interest, which is applicable to your proposed capstone project.

The PICOT statement will provide a framework for your capstone project (the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study).

Conduct a literature search to locate research articles focused on your selected practice problem of interest. This literature search should include both quantitative and qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your practice problem.

Select six peer-reviewed research articles which will be utilized through the next 5 weeks as reference sources. Be sure that some of the articles use qualitative research and that some use quantitative research. Create a reference list in which the six articles are listed. Beneath each reference include the article’s abstract. The completed assignment should have a title page and a reference list with abstracts.

Suggestions for locating qualitative and quantitative research articles from credible sources:

  1. Use a library database such as CINAHL Complete for your search.
  2. Using the advanced search page check the box beside “Research Article” in the “Limit Your Results” section.
  3. When setting up the search you can type your topic in the top box, then add quantitative or qualitative as a search term in one of the lower boxes. Research articles often are described as qualitative or quantitative.

To narrow/broaden your search, remove the words qualitative and quantitative and include words that narrow or broaden your main topic. For example: Diabetes and pediatric and dialysis. To determine what research design was used, review the abstract and the methods section of the article. The author will provide a description of data collection using qualitative or quantitative methods.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
