analyze two examples of how lobbyists affect healthcare legislation

Part I: Lobbyists have been part of the U.S. Government system since the early 1800s. Lobbyists play an important role in healthcare, as they are advocates for their interest group. In a 4-5 page paper, analyze two examples of how lobbyists affect healthcare legislation. Conclude your paper with your opinion about whether the actions of lobbyists have a positive or negative effect on healthcare legislation in the United States. Please keep in mind the position and facility you selected.

**** Nursing Home Administrator at Golden Age Nursing Home

Make sure to include the following:

  1. Discuss the specific interest of the lobbyist in each example.
  2. Discuss in detail some of the ethical issues and moral disputes for each example.
  3. Discuss your position on whether the lobbyists’ actions are positive or negative on healthcare legislation in the United States and support your points with details.
  4. This portion of your assignment will require you to research and examine information from various sources. Use a minimum of five credible sources for your paper, with three being an academic source from the Rasmussen College Online Library (don’t forget to include in-text citations throughout your paper with paraphrasing or quoting)
  5. Make sure to include your APA formatted reference page.

Part II: An agenda can set the tone for a meeting. It’s an important tool to ensure meetings are staying on track and meeting all of the objectives. Create a detailed meeting agenda for a meeting you will hold with your supervisor and fellow department heads discussing your findings (Hint: Microsoft Word has many agenda templates). SkillSurfer in the online tutoring platform offers beginner, intermediate, and advanced tutorials on Microsoft Office products. Make sure to include the following in our agenda:

  1. Explain each example
  2. The majority of the agenda should be focused on whether the actions of lobbyists have a positive or negative effect on healthcare legislation in the United States.

Make sure to use audience specific language and tone in your agenda. Remember, your supervisor and other department heads will be in attendance. Also, make sure to follow proper agenda/business formatting guidelines and make sure document is professional in appearance.

Download the NR439_Research_Database_Form from Doc Sharing and type information about each database directly onto the form. Your paper does NOT need to follow APA formatting; however, you are expected to use correct grammar, spelling, syntax, and write in complete sentences

  • Choose a topic of interest to you that is a significant clinical nursing issue. Please note that the databases you identify could be useful sources of information for your Capstone project in NR451, so choose your topic thoughtfully.
  • Download the NR439_Research_Database_Form from Doc Sharing and type information about each database directly onto the form. Your paper does NOT need to follow APA formatting; however, you are expected to use correct grammar, spelling, syntax, and write in complete sentences.
  • Save the file by clicking Save as and adding your last name, e.g., NR439_Research Database_Smith.docx.
  • Describe your topic of interest. This is worth 15 points.
  • Locate a total of five research databases related to your topic. Each research database description is worth 30 points. You may search for these in various locations, e.g., the Internet or the CCN Library. You may NOT choose the databases that are already familiar to you – MEDLINE, PUBMED (which also indexes MEDLINE), GOOGLE SCHOLAR, and CINAHL. Instead, you are expected to expand your knowledge of evidence-based sources. Places to help you begin include your textbook, which lists databases and websites that report research. The Chamberlain online library (http://library.chamberlain.edu) gives you access to several databases and provide tutorials for searching. Government sites such as those at the National Institutes of Health offer collections of research on a variety of subjects. The key to choosing the databases is that each contains research-based evidence that also pertains to your topic of interest. Again you are looking for new databases to use in the future and not articles related to your nursing clinical issue.
  • Review each database to gather information to create a description for the assignment. Each description must:
    • identify the title of the research database;
    • describe the location of the research database in a way that a reader could find it. This should be the URL. This URL should take you to the home page of the database.
    • name owner or publisher of the source;
    • describe the research database. This must be in your own words and not copied and pasted from the original source. Include the purpose of the database and the subject matter it covers. This may be two to three sentences; and
    • explain how the research found in the database relates to your topic of interest. This may be a two or three sentences.
  • Submit to the Research Database basket in the Dropbox by 11:59 p.m. MT Sunday at the end of Week 3. Please post question about this paper in the Q & A Forum.

Evaluate a primary qualitative research peer-reviewed journal article (suggested length of 3–5 pages) that has healthcare implication

WPT_Task_1_Evidence_Table.docxYour submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.

The rubric provides detailed criteria for evaluating your submission. You are expected to use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

Note: Research evidence must not be more than ten years old.

A. Evaluate a primary quantitative research peer-reviewed journal article (suggested length of 3–5 pages) that has healthcare implications by doing the following:

1. Identify how the researcher addresses the five following areas of the selected journal article, using the attached “Evidence Table”:

  • background or introduction
  • review of the literature

Create a formal report of the study results for the director of nursing

Project 4-1:  Create and interpret a line graph

Project Description:  A line graph, sometimes called a run chart, is used to show changes in performance measurement data over several time periods.  It can also be used for displaying several groups of continuous measurement data simultaneously.  In this project you’ll calculate performance measures, create a line graph of the measurement data and interpret the results.

Instructions

  1. Presume you are the quality director in a hospital.  You’ve been asked to conduct a study for the nursing department.  The purpose of the study is to determine how quickly nurses respond to patient’s call lights (a device used by patients to communicate to nurses that assistance is needed).  You gather from the hospital’s automated Responder 5 system, which has the ability to record all call data, including call-light usage and response times in seconds.  The mean responses time (in seconds) for each shift of the first 15 days of one month are shown below:

Daily mean responses times (reported in seconds):

  1. Using Excel create a line graph that shows the mean response time for each shift of the 15 days. Be sure to label the X and Y Axes in your graph and give it a title.
  2. Create a formal report of the study results for the director of nursing. Include the following information in the report:
  • Purpose of study.
  • How data were gathered (including sample size)
  • Study results:
  • The line graph you created in step #2 (insert the graph into your report)
  • A short narrative of the findings, including any significant performance patterns or trends that you may have identified by analyzing the data.

Remember, this report is for a senior leader in the organization so it should be professional looking.

Discuss Gordon’s functional health patterns as they relate to assessing an individual (and their family). How do the health patterns as they relate to assessments differ, if at all?

Topic 1: Health Patterns  (3 pages of peer reviewed references  less than 5 years)

To determine proper health promotion activities for an individual, you must first assess their current health status. Without a proper assessment, a nurse would be unable to provide adequate care and intervention. Gordon’s functional health pattern framework provides guidance for this assessment.

Discuss Gordon’s functional health patterns as they relate to assessing an individual (and their family). How do the health patterns as they relate to assessments differ, if at all?

Assessment for Health Promotion

The primary responsibility of advanced practice nurses is to promote health, utilizing the processes and patterns that lead toward wellness. They use assessment strategies that address interactions among individuals’ biophysical, psychosocial, and spiritual states and patterns with the environment. The advanced nursing role requires data gathering through assessment. This data is relevant to the health promotion activity of the individual and their current health status. Assessment is key to identification of problems within the individual’s health and lifestyle pattern. Assessment is foundational to all other steps of diagnosing and planning of an individual or a family’s health status and in the promotion of health.

Gordon’s functional health pattern framework, discussed in your Reading, provides guidance for the individual assessment and can also help to organize the basic family assessment information. Each pattern includes age, developmental influences, cultural and environmental roles, functional abilities, and behavior patterns specific to each individual. The advanced practice nurse uses functional patterns to collect data for assessment with emphasis on development stages and risk factors, resulting in a diagnosis.
