Prompt: Our course spent the semester looking at six different lens/theories/perspectives/frameworks to understand inequality along social categorical lines, especially race. The theories also provided us with an idea of how society organizes around lineages of power. For example, if one is looking at American society from a “racial lens” one could see how advantages are awarded to communities across “racial lines.” In other words, one can see how race structures social relationships (power dynamics) in the U.S. shaping the allocation of advantages/privileges to individuals or groups.
Essay Question: Choose one (1) of the theoretical frameworks we studied in class and answer the following question:
What does it mean to be an “American?”
Quick Notes on Theories:
-Race: Power of an Illusion (Film)
-Laws/Policy
Citizenship
Housing
Land Rights
Education
Labor
-Eugenics/Science/Biological
-Fixed/Static Identities
-Social Status/Structure/Color
Answering the question

A character analysis of Hamlet. Hamlet has some of the most complex characters i

A character analysis of Hamlet. Hamlet has some of the most complex characters in literature, and Shakespeare created in Hamlet characters that defy easy explanation. What aspects of your character are admirable? What are their weaknesses or flaws? And what about their mental state? (EX. Hamlet has been called the most intelligent character in all of literature. Why? And how do his melancholy and feigned (or unfeigned) madness add complexity to his character?)

You (and a partner, if you choose) will research a controversial event or issue

You (and a partner, if you choose) will research a controversial event or issue related to the philosophy of sport, and write a 7-10-page typed, double-spaced argumentative paper. The paper is due in the last week of the term. “Philosophy of sport” should be interpreted broadly. You may select from any number of topic areas we cover, and others we do not (sport as a platform for political display, paternalism and PEDs, cheating in sport, theories of general management and the “dehumanization” of sport, body alteration/engineering for enhanced performance, gender norms and their impact on sport, exploitation in collegiate athletics). Please run suggestions by me if you are not sure of its worthiness to study. I expect you to consult multiple authoritative sources and then integrate your findings into your paper. Think in terms of an argumentative paper or a research proposal A Powerpoint/Keynote or PDF of the presentation must be submitted as well. You will be graded on how well you present the relevant issues, the organization of your presentation, and your command of the critical narrative you develop in your paper.

The goal of this paper, and what distinguishes it from previous writing assignme

The goal of this paper, and what distinguishes it from previous writing assignments, is to work with and across multiple texts and/or literary genres or, in the case of the Thucydides prompt, to work exclusively with multiple speeches within Thucydides (see prompts #1 below). You may incorporate any of the assigned literary works for this class into your thesis, with the exception of Homer (Iliad and Odyssey) and Aeschylus (Agamemnon and Eumenides) (i.e., we would like you to work with texts that you have not yet written on in this class). For this paper, you may not consult any sources beyond lectures, discussion sections, and the assigned readings. Your own ideas, developed from what you have learned in lecture, section, and in reading, are what matter. Also see attached file for important information
