Discuss about Assessing Students with Cognitive Disabilities…………..
Cognitive disabilities can be defined as inability of one to handle mental tasks. Students with such intellectual disability find it difficult to handle mental tasks. These kinds of disorders brought about delay in the development of the brain otherwise known as mental retardation.
How to asses students with cognitive disabilities
According to the law, all students are expected to have equal access to high standards of education, meaning equal assessment. Consequently there is need to offer alternative assessment to students with cognitive disabilities since they are disadvantaged. There are many ways to administer such assessments depending on the degree of disability (Almond, Lehr, Thurlow,& Quenemoen,2002).the assessment can be done individually i.e. checking their tasks that they were given personally. Students can be put under close observation, or they can be assessed collectively in a classroom. While administering this alternative assessment much emphasize is put on making sure the content and standards of performance are the same standards as the normal assessments.
Departments that are involved with education have set rules and requirements for such alternative assessments for accountability reasons, (Kleinert, & Kearns, 2001) due to this approach they have been included in the curriculum. (Kearns, Burdge & Kleinert, 2004).
Schools have to make sure that all students with different abilities are thought and assessed according to the curriculum; this has made alternative assessments to students with cognitive disabilities to evolve enormously from just assessing skills to assessing their standards content.
