he short story The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin as cold and calculating is convincing as she is portrayed as mentally fit and physically weak, and her response to Mr. Mallards fatality can be justified for the reason that his death is symbolic of her inner desire to attain freedom.
First of all, Mrs. Mallard is portrayed as a mentally fit character, able to overcome her husband’s untimely death. In the work of the authors, the narrator makes clear that “Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death” (Chopin, Wilson, and Seyersted 352). On the other side, she does not provide unwanted importance to her physical weakness (heart disease). Besides, she never hates her husband and never considers him as the representative of male domination. But Mrs. Mallard provides ample importance to individual freedom. But one need not misunderstand that Mrs. Mallard is happy with her husband’s fatality because she loved him as a human being. In the work of the authors, the narrator makes clear that “And yet she had loved him-sometimes” (Chopin, Wilson, and Seyersted 353). So, her happiness related to her husband’s fatality originates from her desire to be free.
